Saint John River Smallies

My daughter came home for a visit from Cape Cod and wanted
to go fishing. I had donated a fishing trip for a charity auction so I figured
we would go find some fish for that trip. It was a damp and dizzily day as we
put the boat in the water in downtown Fredericton with just a bit of wind.

We headed downriver about a mile to my first spot and Chrissie
nailed a feisty Smallmouth a minute after I shut the engine down. Not a monster
but a river fish always gives a good account of itself when hooked. I guess a
lifetime of living in the current makes them tough. She picked up that one on a
Trigger X tube in Green Pumpkin on a 1/8th ounce head. This area of
the river is full of snags and we broke off a few more tubes as we fished
through it...

Show 5 Magaguadavic Lake

One of the things that I am enjoying with the TV show is the
great people that I a getting to meet. Todays guest is no exception. I am
fishing with LeRoy Washburn who served our Province as an MLA for two terms and
he is a member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. LeRoy has been active
in sports for most of his life both as a participant and a coach and official.
He has officiated at Pan-American Games, the Olympics, Commonwealth Games ant
the World Cup. He is currently VP of the NB Special Olympics Association. On
top of all of this, he likes to fish which works for me.

Most of LeRoy’s fishing has been for Trout or Atlantic
Salmon with a fly rod so I rigged him up with a couple of Shimano Rods and
Reels and we headed for Magaguadavic Lake for some Smallmouth Bass and Eastern
Cha...

Summer Bassin

Show three was all set to go when I received an unexpected cancellation from my guest due to work commitments. As luck would have it, my neighbor Mike made a call to a friend who watches the show and was able to get me a great guest on short notice. A few quick phone calls and we arranged to meet at the highway ramp at 7 am.

After I got that out of the way I spent an hour or so going over the boat and getting some tackle ready for the morning. I try and provide a mix of product for the guests to use as well as balance the tackle for what I think will work when we hit the lake. I rigged up half a dozen Crucial rods in medium and medium heavy, one 6’8” Cumara MH and one G Loomis NRX...

Molson Mercury Bass Tour Perth Andover

First off, let me say that I absolutely love this fishery. There is not a tremendous amount of fishing pressure and once you figure out where the fish are it can be outstanding. We are in Perth for the second last stop on the tour before the two day event out of Woodstock. My regular partner is away on vacation so I am fishing with long time friend Phil Barrett. Philip used to say that it seemed like I fished under a cloud most of the time and today was no exception.

I drew fifteen for a takeoff number so we moved back in the field a bit to let the lower numbers have a clean takeoff. When our turn came Philip put the throttle down and the boat took off- sort of. We didn’t seem to have any power and Phil figured we were running on three cylinders...

Backwater Casting Show 4

This seems to be the year for having to reschedule guests for the show but so far it is working out great. I hit the water today with my friend and neighbor Bill White and Luisa Seftel who is here from Berlin, Germany , on a six week internship with Rogers TV. Bill is an accomplished angler and Luisa is a novice angler whose only prior try at fishing occurred when she was five years old on vacation in France.

The air temperature this morning is at 10 degrees with a forecast high of 26 to 28. Light winds out of the north are forecast to switch to the west by midday. The lake temperature was a nice balmy 21 degrees. Luisa was impressed with both the size of the lake and the lack of boats. Being from Berlin the waterways are always busy and the lakes run on the small side...

Molson Mercury Bass Tour Lake Utopia

Lake Utopia is without a doubt the toughest tournament lake
that we fish every year and this one was no exception. The closer I got to the
lake the heavier the fog was and we ended up with a half hour fog delay. Even
at take-off it was a bit dicey on the open water and we slowed right down and
followed the plot line on the Lowrance to get to our first spot. It is a decent
area and we were pleasantly surprised to have it to ourselves.

I started off with a Zoom Toad and my son tied on a Chug Bug
as we worked around some pads and weeds. He hit the open stuff and I went right
over the top of it. I finally got to try out the new Super8Slick Power Pro on
the Cumara and was not disappointed. Nice easy casting and an instant hookup
even if you got hit right when the bait hit th...

Miramichi Lake revisited

Last year we went in to Miramichi Lake with a group of tournament anglers to try and assist the Department of Natural Resources assess the Smallmouth population after an illegal introduction into the lake. It was a bit early when we went in and none of the anglers caught a fish with the exception of a 14? fish caught by one of the biologists. The following weekend I went back in by myself to have another look after a week of warm weather brought the water temperatures up. I teamed up with Shane who is a third year biology student who is working on this project for the summer. We hooked six bass and landed four of them. None were really big but they were all old enough to spawn. As it turns out, we had caught forty percent of the spawning age fish that were captured last year.

Fast forwar...

Show one on air

I just got the word from Rogers TV that our first show of the 2012 season is now on air. Now if I could only get Rogers Cable TV out here I could see the finished product. Hope you enjoy the show, Terry and I had a lot of fun filming it.
