Season eight and off to the Miramichi

Our first show of the season actually started out last fall even though I only met my guests the morning of the shoot. I donated a fishing trip for the Fredericton Homeless Shelter dinner and auction in November. Kris Mann was also supporting the shelter by attending their dinner and bidding on the items up for auction. That was the beginning and we chatted on the phone to see what he would like to fish for. Striped Bass on the Miramichi was the answer and he wanted to also bring his father in law, Rod.
We put the Triton in at the Enclosure ramp on the edge of Miramichi City and idled down river a bit and started fishing the channel edge. We almost immediately started marking fish on the Lowrance and hooked up on some Stripers very quickly. The fish seemed to be moving through very fast and it was hard to stay on the schools as they moved up river so we were constantly on the move looking for them.

The wind was getting pretty brisk as the day went on and we were fishing in 40 k winds most of the afternoon but we were on the fish and that is what makes the day. I am not sure how many we put in the boat but Kris had it pegged at over a hundred. I know many times we had three fish on at the same time and when Shawn put the camera down for a break it became four at a time.

The guys were a lot of fun to fish with and I am pretty sure that Rod put the most fish in the boat. He was hooked up most of the afternoon.

We were fishing with Shimano Zodias and Crucial Medium Heavy Rods, 2500 Stradic reels spooled with 20 LB Power Pro. We used seven inch flukes on 3/8 ounce swimbait hooks for almost all of the fish we caught. A few came to the boat on a Kalin Mogambo grub on a half ounce jig head, including what looked like the biggest Striper I have hooked to date. Unfortunately the jig got caught in the net and we didn’t get the fish into the boat for a picture.

It took us a while to get beyond scattered fish and into a bunch of them but when we did we stayed on them all afternoon. You know you had a good day when the parting remark was “this is the best day of fishing I have ever had”. You can’t beat that for a day on the water.
