Our last trip out was for Smallmouth Bass on a border lake and now we are headed inland to the Miramichi River for Striped Bass. The change was more than species and location; it was also from a nice sunny day to unrelenting rain. It seemed like they changed the forecast every time I looked at it so we hoped for the best and hit the road.

I was a bit dubious about putting the big Triton in so far up the river but my guest Jeff Wilson assured me that we would have at least three feet of water. Just what I needed to hear with a new boat. Needless to say we never put the Merc up over idle speed when we moved around.

Jeff is the Atlantic Vice President of the StonCor Group of companies and I was lucky to get him out for a day...

Second Annual Atlantic Big Bass Challenge

If you are looking for a fun day on the water you need to check out the Second Annual Atlantic Big Bass Challenge being held out of Nackawic on July 6, 2014. This event is being held in support of First Nations Christian Outreach.

The format is simple, the biggest bass weighed in during each of four two hours periods wins $500. The fish must be alive so a working livewell is necessary. The biggest bass of the day will receive $1500..

I fished this one last year with my neighbor and although we didn’t win anything we had a great time and I have already registered for this year. There will be some great draw prizes as well as the cash payouts. A young lady from Moncton showed us all up last year and I am sure she will be back to show us how it’s done.

Tournament starts at 7:30 Am and there i...

Today’s show actually started in November last year when I was asked to once again donate a fishing trip to the Fredericton Sports Investment Dinner and Auction. The FSI has been raising money for amateur sports since 1981 when a group of local business men got together to raise funds for the Jr Red Wings. The league they were in folded a couple of years later but the groundwork had been laid and the group has been providing funding for amateur hockey and other sports ever since. I believe that last year they surpassed the three million dollar mark in donations to amateur sports over the years.

Coincidently this year’s bidder on my trip is Kurt Allen whose father “Murph” was one of the founding fathers of the group...

New Triton

new Triton 001 (1024x768) new Triton 003 (1024x768) new Triton 007 (1024x768) IMG_0026 (1024x683) IMG_0027 (1024x683)Well the Triton 21 TRX is home and I have got the first three hours of break in on the Mercury. The boat is a dream to drive and although only a foot longer that my last run it smooths out the rough water really well. I have had a chance to really go through the boat and I am beyond impressed with the fit and finish. Everything looks like it is built to last and no corners cut.

I wired up and installed my own sonar / GPS units and put in an pair of Lowrance HDS 9 Touch units to go with the HDS 7 in the dash. I had to run power, Ethernet and nmea 2000 cables which is usually a major pain. Imagine my surprise when I found that the folks at Triton had left a rigging tube running from the stern to the console and it was a walk in the park to run cables and wires. I was a happy camper.

Back home

I am finally back in Canada after what was probably the toughest trip back we have ever had. I replaced a hub assemble and two sets of bearings on the first day and to top that off I also had a tire come off the trailer. That could have ended badly but I had pulled off the highway to see what the vibration was and was barely moving when the tire came off. Just missed a lady coming up the crossroad at the ramp.

I am sitting just outside of Smithfield in the Carolinas with the hub on the ground trying to figure out how to get the car jack under the axle. Not going to be easy to get the trailer up. A guy pulls in front of me in a pickup and hauls a hydraulic jack out of the back. He had seen the tire come off and went home and got a jack and came back to help...

Triton 21 TRX

We will be shooting this season out of a brand new Triton 21 TRX boat rigged with a Mercury 250 Pro XS. This new boat is a bit bigger for those days when we have  multiple guests on board. Tons of storage for our personal gear as well as the camera equipment. The extra length will smooth out the chop on those days when it gets a bit bumpy. I am really excited to move up into this boat and I will post some pics when it arrives. It should be completed on May 14 and then some delivery time. Come on spring.

Check out the new Tritons at www.tritonboats.com

BIG BASS

What a week this has been to say the least. My buddy Jeff flew in from Nova Scotia Sunday night for four days of fishing. He hit it right on the money this year with beautiful warm days and superb fishing. A big treat because other years he has shown up to cold days and cold water and few fish.
We headed for lake Jackson on day two of the trip and started off catching some nice fish on surface frogs fished along hydrilla edges. The fish seemed to come in bunches and we usually caught muliples when we got bit. The lake has changed a lot since I was here two years ago so we were relearning while we went. Most of the Kissimmee grass was gone as was the deeper line of reeds. My guess is that it was sprayed last year...

Before we get to the fishing part I would like to talk about the gear we were using. I am sure some of you are looking at the VRod part on the header and scratching your heads. One of the most often asked questions I get at seminars is how much money do I need to spend to get good equipment. My answer is always to buy the best you can afford and it will last you a good long time. Better to buy a couple of quality rods than four really cheap ones. The V-Rods are a case in point. If memory serves me correctly I got these rods back in 2000...

A change of pace

The Bass bite in this part of Florida has pretty much such down with successive cold fronts dropping the water temperature in the 50’s. I am close the Stick Marsh/Farm 13 which is very shallow and to say the Largemouth don’t like the cold would be an understatement.  Time for another plan.

My buddy, John, and I decided to hit the intercoastal waterway for some saltwater action. This is not something we are familiar with and we have no dedicated salt water gear for fishing. We don’t know enough about it yet to make any substantial investment in new gear either. What to do? The locals told us there were some Bluefish in the Sebastian Inlet. Sounds like some bass gear will do the trick and I broke out a couple of 6’6” Shimano Compre rods, 2500 Stradic reels and 15lb Power Pro.
