We thought we would try something a little different today so we packed the Sierra up and headed for Halifax, Nova Scotia. I picked up Joe Thompson at Cambridge Narrows on the way through and we would meet the rest of the guys down there. Seeing as this was a bit longer of a drive than what we usually deal with we went down the night before. Up at four and the mandatory trip to Tim Horton’s for coffee and we were ready to go.

We met Captain Art Gaetan of Blue Shark Charters at the dock and boarded the 42’ Black Pearl for a trip out onto the Atlantic. Hurricane Hugo had just passed through two days before so, not wanting to take any chances, we popped some Gravol just in case...

Show 6

Let me tell you, I had to get up early this morning. Today we are headed to the Kennebecasis River outside of Hampton for my first attempt at Sturgeon fishing. My guest and guide for the day is Mike Rickett who is working the night shift and is going to hook up with me when I get to Saint John. The city certainly lived up to its reputation this morning with a thick blanket of fog making driving a bit tedious. It also caused a change of plan for launching the boat. We decided to head for the ramp in Hampton instead of trying to drive across the bay in the fog. The good news was that Tim Hortons had opened a store since my last trip there so we made a coffee stop.

We drove down the river from Hampton to one of Mike’s favourite fishing spots on the river and anchored the boat...

Show 5

Andrew Oliver and I hit the road again in the OLEARY Buick GMC Sierra on another bass fishing trip. The truck just turned one year old and it is as good as the day I picked it up. The only cost to operate so far is a couple of oil changes and tire rotations. The guys at the shop said to ignore the old 5000k rule for oil changes and follow the oil monitor system instead. Easy on the wallet and good for the environment.

The plan for today was to do some deep water drop shot fishing but mother nature has a way of making her own plans. It was a wee bit too windy to hold the boat over the isolated structure that we were going to fish.  Just like a tournament day when things don’t go as expected, Andrew and I just went fishing to try and figure out a pattern.

We tried fishing the outside edge...

Backwater Casting Show Four

Well, if you have been watching the show, you know I have been taking a pretty regular beating from the back of the boat by my guests. I figured the best way to cure that little problem was to hit the water by myself and be assured that the count would work out better. The things a guy has to do.

Shawn loaded up the Rogers TV truck and I got the Sierra hooked up to the boat and off we went to the Benton Headpond which is located on the upper end of Eel River. This is an impoundment created by a very low dam on the river itself. I’m not sure if Ducks Unlimited put in the dam but this is a DU watershed. If you are a bird watcher there was no shortage the day we were here.

If you have never been to Benton before, let me say that most of it is very shallow with a ...

Show three

Show number three is up and running. I had the pleasure of sharing a boat with Andrew Oliver, who along with his partner Mike Brennan , were the New Brunswick Sport Fishing Associations  2009 Classic Champions. Andrew certainly lived up to his reputation and put a bunch of fish in the boat. Another back of the boat guy who doesn’t subscribe to the theory that the guy at the front of the boat catches a bigger percentage of the fish.

On this show Andrew and I are fishing a small creek that feeds into one of my favourite local lakes. This is a shallow water, weed and rock infested stream that can harbor some nice fish. We fished a variety of baits but the Blue Fox in-line spinners and the Zoom Horny Toad were the winning baits today...

Show 2 on East Grand Lake with Dennis Wilson

I fished today with Dennis Wilson from Fredericton. As far back as I can remember Dennis has been the guy to beat in Provincial Bass tournaments. After spending the day in the boat with him I can understand why. He doesn’t miss a thing and is dead bang on with every cast.

We started off at the ramp by the Canada Customs office at the head of East Grand Lake. Not room for a lot of trailers but pretty good if you get up early. We idled out of the small channel and then headed down the lake to the gorge. I had marked all of the visible rocks here last year in my jet boat and transferred the waypoints onto my Lowrance GPS on the Stratos. Even with the rocks marked I took the time to idle through this area...

Glen Hunter Show

Glen Hunter and I hit the waters of East Grand Lake for some early season smallmouth action. Despite the early spring that we have experienced the water temperatures were still at a seasonally normal temperature of 61 degrees. It was still a little nippy , at fifty one degrees, when we slid the boat off of the trailer to cross the lake. Not bad on shore but when we kicked the Stratos up on plane it was on the cool side. It was enough to just stay up on the pad as opposed to a bone chilling high speed run.

Our first stop was on a main lake point where I have encountered prespawn fish staging in prior years. I went to work with a Husky Jerk on my new Crucial 6’ 3” rod and Stradic 2500 reel spooled up with Seige green line in 8lb test . I still prefer mono for a jerk bait...

2010 Kids Fishing for Charity Tournament

By Richard Greene

On July 10, 2010 I fished my best tournament of the year with my grandson Ricky. There was no big prize to be won or glory to be had. There was however some serious fishing going on as Ricky fished his heart out for four hours looking for that one killer Yellow Perch that would put him in the trophy winner’s circle. Not a thousand or ten thousand dollar prize but an eight inch high trophy with a Perch on the top.

This was the seventh annual Kids Fishing for Charity tournament that is hosted by the New Brunswick Sport Fishing Association. This is a dual purpose event that we use to get the kids out on the water in a mildly competitive format while at the same time raising money in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The kids are split into three...
