Show three

Show number three is up and running. I had the pleasure of sharing a boat with Andrew Oliver, who along with his partner Mike Brennan , were the New Brunswick Sport Fishing Associations  2009 Classic Champions. Andrew certainly lived up to his reputation and put a bunch of fish in the boat. Another back of the boat guy who doesn’t subscribe to the theory that the guy at the front of the boat catches a bigger percentage of the fish.

On this show Andrew and I are fishing a small creek that feeds into one of my favourite local lakes. This is a shallow water, weed and rock infested stream that can harbor some nice fish. We fished a variety of baits but the Blue Fox in-line spinners and the Zoom Horny Toad were the winning baits today. The great thing with both of these baits is that you can cover a lot of water very effectively.

I prefer to fish the Blue Fox on a six foot six Crucial  rod with a medium action. The medium gives you a better cast  than the medium heavy rods that I normally use in tournament situations. I was throwing silver while Andrew opted for copper in the stained water and his was definitely the one they hit the best. I still prefer monofilament line for this technique and generally use Seige Green in 8 lb test.

For toad fishing I like to use a minimum six foot six inch medium heavy Compre or Crucial rod, a 2500 series Stradic reel spooled with 20lb Power Pro braided line. The reason for the Power Pro is that it has zero stretch which means you get an immediate hookset when you swing. This is especially important with the toad because many of the hits will come on the extreme end of the cast. The zero stretch of the braid helps to insure a hookup when you set.

Boat control was a bit of a challenge today with a strong south wind blowing down the creek. Tricky with all of the visible and submerged rocks in the narrow creek channel. It was particularly difficult on the way back out with the wind at our backs. We had no sun and we would almost be into the rocks before I could see them and turn the boat.

One of the great things about doing this show is that I get to go fishing with some quality anglers whom I don’t usually have an opportunity to share a boat with.
