Molson Mercury Bass Tour Lake Utopia

Lake Utopia is certainly no utopia for anglers. It is by far the hardest lake that we fish every year but like I told one of the younger anglers we are all fishing under the same conditions, the limits are usually just smaller. The best luck we had for this tournament was leaving home early. With over 100mm of rain on Friday several roads were under water Saturday morning and I would have driven right into it in the dark. I have already been off roading with my boat once and I do not care to repeat the experience. The lake is connected to the Magaguadavic R. by a  canal and as we suspected the river was very high, fast and dirty. Everyone that had prefished the river was out of luck. The lake itself wasn’t to bad, just a little higher than normal. We started off shallow with a Skitter Pop and my partner picked up a couple of fish in three feet of water. No size  but on this lake they all help. We worked this area hard for over and hour with no more bites so we moved out in the main lake. She was a wee bit breezy to say the least. My partner had found a deep hump with a peak at 15 feet and we started there. He cut the engine and we slid up unto it and I dropped a half ounce drop shot rig with a Cross Tail Shad. It hit the bottom and almost immediately a fish was on. Good start and we picked up four fish on this spot. We worked several other humps and ledges out to thirty feet and picked up one here and there. All together we hooked a dozen or fifteen fish but couldn’t get the size we were hoping for. The number of fish was ok because as it turned out many teams did not get a limit. We ended up in fifth place in the tournament with 9.35 lbs and moved into first place for the team of the year points. The team that won { Ray MacFarlane and Larry Sandford } are only one point behind us and it is going to be a challenge staying in front. Our next event is on the Saint John River and it is in full flood with most of the tributaries way over their banks. We have two weeks before we fish but there is still lots of rain forecast this week.
