A Day Off

Some days a guy just needs a day off and this was it. The Premier needed a break and so did my buddy Mike Eagles so we all went fishing. A lot of our water here in New Brunswick doesn’t get a lot of pressure so when you get out on one of these little gems you can have a ball. I started the guys off early on a shallow shoal that breaks off quick from 2′ to 6′. They were throwing a Blue Fox up over the shoal and bringing it back over the edge. This is usually like using dynamite in this particular lake but not today. The guys caught 8 or nine fish as we worked the area. Normally it is more like 20 or 30. The next spot was the same result, the fish just weren’t on it in numbers.
It was obvious that shallow would get us some bites but not the numbers we were after so I turned the boat out into deeper water and watched the Lowrance for schools of bait out in 20 to 35 feet of water. I was marking quite a bit of bait but not much that looked like bunched up smallies. I dropped a buoy marker on a spot that looked like it had a half a dozen fish on the edge of a rockpile and gave David and Mike a quick refresher on fishing the dropshot.
My preference for this is a longer and lighter rod than what I would usually use so Mike ended up with one of my old 7′M V Rods, David got the Cumulus and I took the Cumara.DX72 Drop Shot rod. We used a couple of different baits including wacky rigged Stickos, Jackall Cross Tail Shad and Jackall Super Pin-Tail. The bite still wasn’t what I expected and then the sun broke through the clouds and it was like someone threw a switch. We boated 73 fish in the next four hours including five triples. No monsters but lots of 1.5 to about 2.25 lb fish. I easily went through the biggest part of my supply of the Jackall baits. Time to get some more.
It can be a bit chaotic with a drop shot with fish jumping and twisting everything and at one point I had to rerig for Mike and he got my Cumara Drop Shot rod and I never got that back again until we were done. I can see one on his birthday wish list.
Lots of fun for a couple of guys who work long hours and don’t get to go fishing as often as they would like. We could have stayed longer but the Premier rarely gets a whole day to himself and we had to hustle him back to town so he could go up to the Miss New Brunswick Pageant in Woodstock. He said it was always one of his favourite events and it was always enjoyable. Next time he needs a day off I expect I will get  a call. As a bonus right after I got home I got a call from Jake Allen from the Saint Louis Blues and he is going to tape an episode of Backwater Casting with me next week. Guess what lake we are going to.
