Our last tournament before Perth was a total bomb. Our fish got wiped out by high muddy water after a severe rainstorm the day before. We never made the right adjustments on the river and it showed at the end of the day. We were somewhat apprehensive heading for Perth because it had rained off and on during the week but nothing severe. We went up on Friday night and took a drive down by the water and it looked pretty good. Before we turned in we checked the weather again and they were having thunderstorms about 30 miles upriver. UGH
We had a heavy mist in the morning and no sun at take off. We ran downriver to a spot that was close to takeoff but no bites. We turned around and headed upriver where we intended to spend the rest of the day. First two areas we fished were heavily stained and we only got one little bass. The sun broke through around 9 and we got a much better look at the section of river we were fishing. The side we were on was dirty, the other side was clean and that is where the smallies were.
The trick was deeper water running in to a rocky bank. I got the first one on a Squad Minnow tossed right up against the bankĀ  and worked back quickly in the current. My partner started throwing a Pointer 110 after I put a half a dozen fish in the boat. I didn’t see much point in both of us throwing a jerk bait so I switched to a Sivler Blue Fox and went to town on them. Most of the fish hit it within ten feet of the bank and Philip had to keep the boat close enough to the bank that I could just hit it. Most of the jerk bait bites came a little further off for some reason.
We were culling at just under three pounds and there just didn’t seem to be any bigger ones but it turned out to be just enough. We weighed in 15.30 pounds and beat out Ray McFarland and Larry Sandford by a couple of ounces. Coming in third were Jason Gogan and Keith Cormier. The three teams also were in a three way tie on the lunker which I have never seen happen before.
Ray and Larry are on fire and have won two of the last three tournaments with a second place in Perth. They are currently in the lead for the Team of the Year points race and we are tied for second. We fish again in Woodstock on the Labour Day weekend and if we win and they don’t improve their points we can tie them. They are tough so that is a very big if. I think some practice time is in order for this one.

Today we fished with Shimano Crucial Rods in 6’6″ M and MH. I went with a Jackall Squad Minnow to start and Phil started with a Skitter Pop. He went to a Pointer 110 and I switched to a Silver Blue Fox .
