I donated a free fishing trip to St. Thomas Universities annual charity golf tournament and the gentleman that won it has a son, Micah, who is a fan of the show. A few phone calls back and forth and it was decided that the son would take the trip with me and retired NHL player Mike Eagles and we would make a show of it.
We picked Micah up at 6:30 am and headed for the lake. There are a few places on the lake that fish really shallow, almost like Largemouth fishing in the pads and weeds and that is where we opted to start.
We tried some surface frogs across the weed edges and pads and although we caught a few that way it turned out to be a tube and Senko kind of day. Casting the Senko in and around the pads and weed edges produced some quality fish and when we got into some of the rocky areas the tube was the ticket.
I had the guys rigged with 2500 Stradics on 6’6″ Crucial rods and I was using a 6″8
Cumara medium action with a 2500 Stradic. Mike got his hands on the Cumara at one point and I ended up fishing the rest of the day with a Crucial. He wasn’t giving it up once he got it.
Micah is a big sports fan and he got a real kick out of fishing with Mike and swapping stories and they really hit it off well.
Micah’s dad dropped me a note afterwards and told me that he thought Micah was a fishing nut before he went out with us but was even more enthused after we fished with him. It is great to see the teens picking up the sport and enjoying everything that the outdoors has to offer. We had a great day with a very personable young man.
