001 (1024x768) (1024x768)We wrapped up the show season fishing in the capital region with my guest Bobby Despres, Sports Tourism Co-ordinator for Fredericton. We actually caught a couple right off the dock at Carleton Park while Shawn was unloading the camera equipment. Once we got loaded we idled up the river a hundred feet or so and went fishing. My first Smallmouth was caught just opposite of Bobby’s downtown office. Not a bad way to start the day.
We fished up to the old bridge piers and picked up a bunch of small fish but none of the big girls we were looking for so we headed upriver towards the Bucket Club. I don’t go up to that area a lot so you can imagine my concern when my Lowrance suddenly spiked from eight feet to just a foot and back down to six or so feet. Not a great feeling when you are running a brand new Triton up the river. When we came down I followed my track line on the screen at idle and sure enough there was a high spot with gravel and grass on it that would have made a real mess of the Mercury if the water had been down a bit more.
We fished around the Bucket Club campground for a while with a mix of baits but the fishing was spotty to say the least. We moved down the river a bit closer to Fredericton and fished a weedline out in four feet of water. I was catching them pretty good on a Jackall Super Eruption spinnerbait and a white Zoom Fluke. I was using a mix of Shimano Crucial and Cumara rods with 2500 Stradics and 15 lb test Power Pro and I had Bobby using the same. Bobby is the first guest on the show to catch some Smallmouth on a buzz bait and he caught two good fish on it.
The fishing was pretty good and even Shawn took a few minutes to catch a couple on his lunch break. I had a great time with Bobby and he was a lot of fun to fish with.
