Bassin’ on Spednic Lake

When it gets hot it seems to happen all at once. The order of business today was lots of water and a generous helping of sunscreen The temps hit 31 by the time we got off the water.
I am fishing with my buddy Mike Eagles and his brother in law Mark Hegarty on the upper end of Spednic Lake and we are on the hunt for Smallmouth in this rock infested body of water. I don’t have a lot of familiarity with the lake so we are moving around quite a bit to hit likely looking spots. A couple of creek inlets provided several nice fish first thing in the morning but the bite got a bit tougher as the sun climbed and water temps were pushing 22 degrees at the surface.
We picked up fish on a Silver Blue Fox, Jackall Super Eruption Spinnerbait, Melon Orange Tube and Green Pumpkin Bass Pro Sticko’s. Mike even got some hits on a crankbait later in the day. Most of the fish were near grass but the biggest of the day came off of a shallow rock on the Jackall Spinnerbait.
One area that I was a bit familiar with usually held some great fish but they had lockjaw on this trip. Our total catch for the day was about 30 Bass, 5 Eastern Chain Pickerel and a couple of Perch. The only boat we saw all day appeared to be a Maine guide in a big square stern canoe, other than that we had our portion of the lake to ourselves.
If you go be aware that it is extremely rocky and they are not marked. We spent most of the day at idle when we moved between spots and used the Lowrance Structure Scan to watch for rocks to the sides and bottom. As I spend more time there I will be able to develop some safe routes for getting around a bit quicker.
Next time in I am going to go explore the deeper water and see if we can find some schooled up fish out in the open.

A great day with a couple of great guys, doesn’t get much better than that
