Stick Marsh Spillway

The talk has always been if you hit the spillway when they a pulling water through, you don’t need to go anywhere else to catch fish. There is no way to find out when they will open the gates so you have to go look. Mark Osgood and I headed out across the marsh in his Bass Cat for a look and they were really hauling water through.
We weren’t early enough to get one of the prime spots, the guys ahead of us must have run over in the dark. We tried a mix of baits and caught fish on 10″ Black and Blue Worms, Rattle Traps and Sticko’s.
Mark ended up with the two in the photos plus a bunch of two to four pound fish. I had some nice ones but nothing that was worth photographing.

It was a costly day for me. I grabbed the net for one of Mark’s bigger fish and knocked a brand new Shimano Stella combo out of the boat in twelve feet of water. Never got it back but I am going to try and drag for it next week. Very short lived Chrismas present for me. and I hope I can recover it.
I must admit it was a lot of fun running the big Cat for a few days after using my 17 footer for the last little while. I do miss my Triton down here but the HOA says I can’t leave it in the driveway.

You don’t need heavy gear for this type of fishing. I was using a 6’6″ Crucial, a 2500 Stradic spooled with 15 lb Power Pro and a Flourocarbon leader. Lots of power to get these big fish into the boat.20160131_110538
