Not just hockey

This trip we had the pleasure of fishing with Alisha Gilbert who is a forward with the STU Women’s Hockey Team. We had a bit of a chilly boat ride with the temps sitting at about 6 degrees when we put the boat in the water.

Alisha likes to fish when she has time off from school, hockey, two jobs and as a volunteer with the Chipman fire department. This is one busy girl. A bonus for today is that she has never caught a smallmouth and we are going to take care of that little problem for her.

The first spot we stopped at, I had smallies come up and hit a Jackall SK Pop Grande topwater on back to back casts and boy did they ever eat it. I was really watching my hands trying to get those hooks out.

We used an assortment of baits including the SK which is a great popper for smallmouth. We also caught fish on white flukes with a chartreuse tail, a pinkish tube jig, a jerkbait and a whole package of Jackall Flick Shake worms in Bluegill.

It was kind of funny because I had a couple of sunfish try and eat a soft stick bait and thought I would try and catch one to show on camera. I down sized to a number one Gammie and put on the Flick Shake worm. First cast and I had a sunfish to the boat and they sure are a pretty little fish. I thought I would see if I could get one a bit bigger and made another cast and caught a very ticked off smallmouth. We ended up using the whole package on the bass.

As always, Shawn used a lunch break to put down the camera to get in on some of the action and boated his fair share. One of the perks of taping a fishing show.

Alisha seemed to be enjoying herself and told me later that it was the most fish she had ever caught on one trip. She was absolutely amazed at how hard the smallies fought. I think we have another convert to the sport.

Todays tackle was a mix of Shimano rods and reels and we even had one of my old V-Rods in the boat. We were using 2500 Stradics spooled with 10 lb Power Pro and 8 lb Seige mono.

This one will air in the fall on Rogers TV NB.
