I always enjoy getting out on the boat, catching a few fish and taking in the beautiful scenery and wildlife we have here in New Brunswick but some days are extra special. Today was one of those days when the fun level got bumped up a bunch thanks to our guest Ethan who is ten. The young man is already well on his way to being an accomplished angler and I knew from his first cast that he could handle a rod.
We actually had two days out with Mike and Ethan, not because we weren’t on fish the first time but because the camera got dunked in the lake and we know what happens when you mix power and water. We had already made the trek to the lake so it turned into a fishing day and despite high winds all day we managed to put a good many fish into the boat. We rescheduled the trip and we ended up being almost a month later after working around everyone’s schedules.
Our first stop was on a weedline on the old river channel and we boated a few nice fish right away. The nice thing about this spot is that it is not on shore so it doesn’t get fished a great deal. Next we moved up on a shallow flat and got some on small spinners and top waters. Top waters are still one of the most fun ways to catch them.
We moved around a lot trying to find a concentration of fish and did everything from open water weeds, steep banks that dropped into 35 feet, long rocky points and some deeper flats. We even fooled around for a while with an underwater camera. Ten minutes of watching the camera and not seeing any fish had Ethan back on deck with a rod in his hands. My kind of guy for sure.
Ethan’s favourite rig of the day was a Shimano Zodias 270M with a 2500 Stradic Fk and 8 lb mono. He fished a drop shot on this for most of the day and went through every package of Jackall Flick Shake worms that I had in the boat. He caught one of the smallest fish of the day and the three biggest ones of the day with lots of mixed sizes in between. Mike fished a bit and he caught a few but he was much more interested in watching his grandson catch fish and spend his time taking pictures and videos. It reminded me of what one of my buddies said at the kids tournament one day. When you are fishing with kids you are making memories by the minute.
As I said on camera at the end of the show, if you want to bump up the fun for the day get yourself a ten year old and go fishing. It brings a different level of excitement to the day.
