20180711_102327Fishing Smallmouth Bass with Adam Foster of Strike Back Sport Fishing Adventures.
Some days are diamonds and some days are stones and today was definitely a diamond kind of day for fishing. We started off fishing a shallow flat that ran from two feet in the rocks and boulders out to about seven feet of mixed rock, sand and grass. We picked up fish on in-line spinners, tubes and Adam’s Ned rig but we were not getting the size we were looking for so further down the lake we go. As is typical for New Brunswick lakes this one is not charted and going slow and keeping an eye on the Lowrance was the best way to keep the Evinrude lower unit in one piece.
Stop two was on a sharp bank that dropped very quickly into forty feet of water. We caught fish here on drop shot rigs with wacky rig soft stick baits and Adam picked some up on a Texas rigged fatty Zworm with a tungsten weight. I caught him smearing all of his plastics with Liquid Mayhem scents which he is a firm believer in. I was drop shotting with a Zodias 270M spinning rod with a 2500 series Sahara reel. I like the softer tip of the medium for drop shot. Still no big fish just lots of two’s and off we went again looking for some big ones.
Stop three we tried a cove that was a bit sheltered from the wind and this had rock and boulders around the perimeter and the rest was pretty much a sand bottom. We did one lap in here and picked up a nice Chain Pickerel on an in line spinner and some Smallmouth on a Melon Orange tube and the Texas rig worm. As we started out of the cove the wind was blowing into the shoreline we had to go around and I grabbed a Crucial / Curado combo and started throwing a ½ ounce Strike King spinnerbait almost on to the shore and picked up seven fish as I worked the Triton around to the next spot we were going to park on. As we rounded the point Adam spotted a Smallmouth chasing the spinnerbait to the boat but it went back down without hitting it and he nailed that one with a quick cast with his Ned rig setup with a shroom jig head and a worm. We where moving quickly through here to get across to where I wanted to stop and picked up a few more on the way across the cove.
Stop four was the diamond of the day. I threw the spinnerbait across the point and promptly had on a feisty two and a half pounder that had three more chasing it. Adam nailed one of those and it started. This is one of may favourite jerk bait spots at any time of year so I tied on a new Jackall Rerange 110 and let that one fly over the point. I was casting straight into the wind but the Rerange cast like a bullet with an Exage 7’ MH rod, Nasci 2500 reel with 20 lb Power Pro. There is an audible snap when the weight transfer system on the Rerange hits the back of the lure on the cast. Anyway back to the fishing, first cast with the Rerange I said Adam there is a fish under the one I hooked so he tossed his Ned rig at it but it turns out there was no follower, I had them both. What a way to start off with a new bait. This turned out to be the “spot” for the day. We just caught them one after another and had enough footage that Shawn put the camera down and I handed off the Rerange 110 to him so he could get his line pulled. I tied on a Jackall Squad minnow and went right back at them again. Pretty sure that Shawn ended up with the big fish of the day.
Adam caught so many fish off on one big rock on his Texas rig worm that we started calling it Adam’s rock. No idea why they set up on that particular rock but he must have caught ten fish off of it. So how much fun was it today? We left the house at 530 this morning and at 4 I asked Shawn if he wanted to call it a day because he is on the clock. Heck no he said let’s catch some more fish. It was a day for the books with lots of fish and a great guest. Next trip in there is with a ten year old and if it is half as good he will be one exited young man.
