Season finale, Woodstock, NB

Backwater Casting season finale.
It sure is tough to book a show around the weather this time of year but we got this one right. We travelled up to Woodstock yesterday with our guest Ray McFarlane for some late season Smallmouth Bass fishing. A bit on the cold side, some light rain and a little bit of wind were the order of the day.
Our first stop started off a bit on the slow side with me throwing a tube and Ray fishing a Shakey Head. It was probably a good ten minutes before we got a fish and Ray struck first and brought a chunky 2.5lber to the boat. Another cast at the same general spot produced another one and while I was watching to see how big the second fish was going to be I felt that old familiar tick on the line and we were into our first double header of the day. The trick was fishing dead slow in the 48 degree cold water. We picked up several more fish in the vicinity and then started moving up towards the point and I picked up another fish on a Jackall Rerange jerk bait on the way up to it. The point did not produce any good fish so we pulled the Minn Kota fired up the Evinrude and moved. As it turned out, Ray was quite familiar with our second stop of the day and again he nailed the first couple of fish.
This area generally fishes much better in the fall than it does in the summer and although they weren’t stacked up on it there was a good number of fish caught. As the bank flattened out a bit and became shallower further from the bank I switched back to the Rerange and picked up a few more and again this was a slow presentation. Rip it down a couple of feet and wait, every hit came on the pause. Ray had only brought a couple or rods so I gave him a Zodias / Stradic combo that he could rig a jerk bait with and he tied on a Jackall Squad Minnow.
We have had some rain off and on the last few days and some of the small creeks and culverts were running a bit more water than we usually see so we tried a couple of them that normally have fall fish on them but out of the four that we fished only one had a few fish on it. Our Producer, Shawn, took a break from the camera along this stretch a he made a contribution to our days total catch.
I was going to make a run further up the river at this point but realized it was already 3:30 and it didn’t make sense to make a run and be farther away from the ramp so I turned the boat back downriver and fish a flat just below Woodstock. We picked up fish along the flat on the jerkbaits, a tube and a BPS Sticko and put our fourth double of the day in the boat. By then it was 4:30 and Shawn had to meet someone in Fredericton so we called it a day and headed for the ramp.
We never saw the sun all day until we got back to the ramp. We had some wind and got some light rain and we were a bit chilled by times but that all seems to fade into the background when the Smallmouth are on a fall feed. There is still some great fishing to be had up and down the river so pick your days, dress for the weather and enjoy what the season brings
