It’s tournament time

Phil and I are off to a good start on the New Brunswick Sport Fishing ” Triton / Evinrude Bass tour. We took a third place on the season opener on Harvey Lake and this past weekend we reeled in a first place finish. Points are important and two low ones like this to start the year off is fantastic.
The Harvey tournament was one of those cold wet days that just grinds at you and the bite was very slow in the cold conditions. We only had eight bites all day which turned out to be more than most teams had caught. It was just enough to get us to third.
The Victoria Day weekend saw us in beautiful Nackawic for the annual Nackawic Big Axe challenge. The Lions Club opened up their facilities for us and put on great breakfasts both mornings and a nice hot BBQ in the afternoon on Sunday. All food product for the BBQ was supplied by Mike Brennan and the folks at Victory Meat Market in Fredericton. The Lions did the cooking and all funds raised went to support the Children’s Diabetes Camp here in NB.
First off I would like to thank Nathan Robinson of Natural Light and Photo for the great pictures. We are very lucky to have him shooting our events. On Saturday the fishing was reasonably decent considered the water temps were still in the forties but Sunday Philip and I felt like we were struggling for most of the day and it was a very difficult bite for us. We are fishing on an impoundment controlled by NB Power and they dropped the water levels all weekend.
With a four mile an hour current rolling in our starting spot, boat control quickly became an issue and we finally had to abandon the plan and just go fishing. Philip definitely gave me a bit of a tune up today and I made the best of it as the “Net Man”. We were fishing pretty much the same stuff but whatever he was doing differently was what the fish were looking for. We went to the weigh-in thinking we had a high 13 or low 14 lb limit but ended up with 14.95 lbs anchored with a 4.5 lunker of the day. We squeaked a win out by a mere .20 over our buddies Ray and Larry who had a very consistent weekend. Weights that would normally win this event didn’t even get a check this time around. Lots of really nice bags weighed in. Lots of mix and match Shimano combos and Power Pro in the boat for this one.
We ended up with the biggest single day weight on Saturday at 17.90 lbs, day one lunker at 4.1lbs, day two lunker at 4.5 lbs and winning weight at 32.85 lbs. . Some days it is just your turn and we consider ourselves lucky to take first place competing with the best anglers from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. There are some hot sticks in the Maritimes.
I had four different combos on the go for the weekend but the two most productive were A: Crucial 6’6″rod with a 2500 Stradic spooled with 10 lb mono and a Jackall Rerange 110 jerk bait. The second was a Shimano Zodias rod with a 2500 Stradic spooled with 15 lb Power Pro and a flouro leader throwing a one eight once tube.
A great big thank you out to the town of Nackawic for hosting the event and to the Lions Club for all of their help and I hope we helped you reach your donation target for the weekend. I would also like to thank the NBSFA Board of Directors our tournament crew and sponsors for making this all possible
