Tournament #3 New Brunswick Sport Fishing Assoc.

Oromocto1st

The New Brunswick Sport Fishing Assoc. tournament season third event of the season was yesterday after a six week layoff to allow the bass to get through their spawning season. Phil and I managed to put together a bag weighing 14.30 lbs for a first place finish. Phil is a topwater nut and usually puts some really big fish in the boat with it but not this weekend. His topwater bite was only good for some two pounders this time around. He wasn’t long switching around and going to the bottom with his favourite soft stickbait. He was using a mix of Shimano rods with Stella reels spooled with Power Pro and a fluorocarbon leader. I was mixing it up a bit with soft plastics, a 3/8 ounce Strike King spinnerbait and soft plastics. I was using 7′ Shimano Exage rods with 2500 Stradics spooled with the new Power Pro Super Slick v2 which is awesome. For the spinnerbait I had a GLoomis E6X rod and a Curado 150DC also spooled with Power Pro. We caught fish shallow in the morning but the bigger fish were all deeper and we culled all of the early fish as the day went on. One odd thing that happened today is that Phil got stuck with a couple of spines from a Smallmouth and had a pretty severe allergic reaction to it. We will be very conscious of that moving forward. Magaguadavic Lake for next weekend’s event should be interesting. Not. A big thank you to the board members and the tournament crew for another great event. See you next week. Oh, no fish pictures, it was too hot and we got them right back into the river.
