Fishing with Wendy

I was short a guest the other day due to an incorrect weather forecast and Wendy bailed me out by jumping in the boat with Shawn and I for a day on the water. The big bite was much harder than I anticipated but we did get a few to the boat with a few more cutting us off in the rocks. There is a really healthy population of fat 14 and 15 inch fish which keeps you busy.
We were fishing in extreme heat and high winds in the afternoon and we had to really mix it up to stay on fish. In this lake the old saying “find the grass-find the bass” did not hold up to well. Some fish were on sharp breaks into 25 ft of water-no grass but lots of rock. I tossed a drop shot on a 7′ medium Zodias and Wendy was walking a ned rig down the break. We both caught fish.
The next stop was a shallow rocky flat that did not produce anything at all so we took off down the lake to one of the creeks that dumps in. It had a nice weed flat developing in front of it and I got a nice one fairly quickly on a Jackall Dooon Spinnerbait. Wendy had one good one come off in the air and she got another nice one right where the creek dumps in and that was it for an hour.
By then it was blowing and we got on a five foot deep flat with scattered grass and got a few more decent fish on the Spinnerbait.
We finished off the day in ten feet of water with a bit of emergent grass and picked up a few more.
It was a challenging day and we kept moving and trying different baits and caught them on ReRange jerkbaits, Dooon Spinnerbaits, Ned Rigs and I lost my new Shimano World Pop to a smallmouth that took it into the rocks. Recording all of the rocks and trails on my Lowrance Live saves my lower unit every time I boat there.
A big shout out to Wendy for stepping in on short notice. She is a great angler and it is easy to see why she and Rob and quickly climbing in the tournament standing.
One more show to do this week and then off to Woodstock to do a fishing clinic for the younger folks at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Hope you are all having a great summer.
