2011 First Trip

I think I may be crazy. Woke up Saturday morning and it is minus 7 degrees out at 5am. Had a coffee then hooked up with my buddy Phil and his wife Nancy and headed Stateside to prefish for next weeks Maine Blade Runners tournament on the Grand Falls Flowage. A quick Q & A session with the US customs officer and off we went to the launch.

We launched the boat at Squirrel Point and headed { slowly } to our first spot. Slowly because it was still only minus 7. I had so many clothes on I could hardly move and I was still not really happy. We got set up on our first spot and I nailed a fish on my second cast. Phil tossed a bait in behind the one I got and he was hooked up as well. Not a bad way to start off with the cold air and water at 5 degrees. We got four fish off of this spot in about fifteen minutes. The only complication was the guides were freezing shut and the line was freezing to the spool. Oh, and my fingers were frozen as well.

We moved around a bit after it got warmed up to zero. No more ice in the guides and casting got a lot easier. It would appear that the bulk of the fish are still holed up somewhere in deep water but things change fast at this time of year. We put 8 fish in the boat with a tournament weight around 13.5 lbs. We were able to have a look at some of the areas that we like to fish and formulate a bit of a game plan for next weeks tournament.

I tried out my new Crucial 6’3″ spinning rod with my jerkbaits and I absolutely love it. It has just the right action and length for working jerkbaits. Sure hope it is a bit warmer when we hit the water next week to see if we can bring some of those American dollars back to Canada with us.
