Show 5 Magaguadavic Lake

One of the things that I am enjoying with the TV show is the
great people that I a getting to meet. Todays guest is no exception. I am
fishing with LeRoy Washburn who served our Province as an MLA for two terms and
he is a member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. LeRoy has been active
in sports for most of his life both as a participant and a coach and official.
He has officiated at Pan-American Games, the Olympics, Commonwealth Games ant
the World Cup. He is currently VP of the NB Special Olympics Association. On
top of all of this, he likes to fish which works for me.

Most of LeRoy’s fishing has been for Trout or Atlantic
Salmon with a fly rod so I rigged him up with a couple of Shimano Rods and
Reels and we headed for Magaguadavic Lake for some Smallmouth Bass and Eastern
Chain Pickerel. LeRoy hooked his first Smallie on his second cast but quickly
found out that hooking one and putting it in the boat are two different things.
The bass won that round with a nice two foot jump and a head shake. The next
fish fell to a Skitter Pop fished across a slight offshore hump. We had several
more blow ups and some misses on the tubes and it just felt like they were not
committing to the bait when they hit. I decided to move the boat over to a
shallower, weedier area and have a go at the Pickerel for a while.

I gave LeRoy and 6’8” Cumara rod with a 2500 Stradic spooled
with 15lb Power Pro. I rigged a Zoom Horny Toad on one of Zoom’s Toad hooks and
just pointed him in the grass edges and told him to cast and wind, keeping the
Toad on the surface. To say it was chaos would be an understatement, the
Pickerel would rip out of the weeds and just smash the bait. Even the ones that
didn’t get hooked up were fun because you could see them coming across the
surface. We even picked up a few really nice Smallmouth as we went through the
area.

We had a good day and although we only boated twenty one of
the fish that hit we had lots more on that didn’t make it to the boat. It was a
pleasure spending the day with LeRoy and sharing some of his past experiences
while we fished.
